Virgin Media unleashes sub £10 handset

VM560 to cost just £9.99

  Virgin Media has announced what has to be one of the cheapest mobile phones of all time - the £9.99 VM560.
Manufactured by Alcatel One Touch, the VM560 is a candy bar handset that doens't have any of the hardware or features to worry the iOS or Android brigade, but comes in at a price that is less than some of the apps for those platforms.
The £9.99 price is available with a £10 PAYG top-up and for that you'll be getting 300 texts. You can also surf the web for 50p a day - that'll buy you 50MB.
As for the phone itself, it's not likely to hit any Top 10 lists, but for around the same price as a couple of pints in a West End bar then you can't really afford to be picky.
It's got a 2-megapixel camera, MP3 playback, an FM radio and is Wi-Fi enabled too. It can also handle a microSD up to 8GB. For less than a tenner, we say that's not half bad.
It's out now, available direct from Virgin Media in black chrome. A pink version will land on 19 September.

Nokia CEO says Google Motorola deal creates uncertainty for Android ecosystem

And rules out Microsoft takeover

  Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has come out all guns blazing in defence of Nokia's decision to jump aboard the good ship Windows Phone 7, rather than taking the Android path.
Speaking in China, Elop said that the Google / Motorola deal has caused some big waves in the Andoid arena, saying that "it's only with time that we'll fully understand" the deal.
He said that for other manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung, there will no be concerns as to how the deal will affect their Android allegiances.
"It creates a great deal of uncertainty for the Android ecosystem," he said. "I'm sure it is of great concern for many of the Android participants."
Elop also dismissed suggestions that Nokia may end up making a similar move to Motorola, by becoming part of Microsoft.
"We see our future as a standalone company and we don't anticipate any chnages as it relates to Microsoft," he said.
The CEO,  who's proved that he's not afraid of making big calls already during his spell as Nokia boss, also indicated that he fully expects the company to bounce from its recent slump thanks to the Windows Phone move.
"We believe that the quality of the experience with the new Nokia devices will be attractive to existing Symbian customers, as well as to customers of other operating systems environments."
Elop said that testing for Nokia's Windows Phone 7 devices had gone well, resulting in positive feedback. He also statetd that current Symbian customers will be able to make use of certain measures to transfer "certain details" across to the new platform. Whether this means a dedicated app, we'll have to wait and see.
The first devices will land in Q4, he said, and the launch will be on a country by country basis.

  Do you now look at your Samsung Wave or Wave II device with contemptuousness hidden beneath your eyes, following the unveiling of the awesome looking, Bada 2.0 packing, Wave 3 over at IFA?
Do you long for some Bada 2.0 action to at least put you on an OS-par with your Wave based contemporaries?
Well look and long no longer (or actually, just for a bit more) as it has been announced that Bada 2.0 will be making its way to the older Wave models later this year.
The news was confirmed in a tweet from Samsung's Bada team, although they did warn that the features could differ slightly when it arrives in Q4, due to "device specification such as CPU, memory size, etc."
Bada may not be on a par with the likes of iOS or Android, but at the last count there were more than 4.5 million users worldwide and in Q2 it proved more popular than Windows Phone 7.

Pentagon admits suffering major cyber attack in March

The Pentagon has admitted it suffered a major cyber attack in which thousands of files were taken by foreign hackers.

Deputy Defence Secretary William Lynn said that in a March attack and other breaches, hackers had taken information on "our most sensitive systems".

The admission came as the Pentagon rolled out a strategy for strengthening US cyber capabilities and addressing threats and attacks in cyberspace.

The plan would treat cyberspace in a similar manner to land, air and sea.

"In the 21st Century, bits and bytes can be as threatening as bullets and bombs," Mr Lynn said, unveiling the plan.

In a speech at National Defense University in Washington, Mr Lynn said about 24,000 files containing Pentagon data were stolen from a defence industry computer network in March, marking one of the largest cyber attacks in US history.

Extracting files

He said at least one attack - a previously revealed 2008 penetration of classified computer systems - had come from a foreign intelligence service, and in an interview ahead of the speech said the Pentagon believed the March attack had been perpetrated by a foreign government.

Previous cyber attacks have been blamed on China or Russia.

"We have a pretty good idea" who did it, he told the Associated Press news agency.

In his speech, he said some of the stolen data was "mundane, like the specifications for small parts of tanks, airplanes, and submarines.

"But a great deal of it concerns our most sensitive systems, including aircraft avionics, surveillance technologies, satellite communications systems, and network security protocols," he said.

Mr Lynn said cyber attacks in the future would not only focus on stealing data but also damaging US defences or even causing deaths.

He added that virtual intruders have previously tried to extract files related to missile tracking systems and the Joint Strike Fighter.

Though nations like China and Russia have been blamed for many previous cyber attacks, the Pentagon fears terrorist groups could eventually strike American computer networks and steal data.

"Keystrokes originating in one country can impact the other side of the globe in the blink of an eye," Mr Lynn said.

'Too aggressive'

He added that information technology has become so important to the US government that it "virtually guarantees that future adversaries will target our dependence on it".

Mr Lynn said the Department of Defense Strategy for Operating in Cyberspace was defensive, countering earlier criticism that the strategy might be too aggressive.

In a release accompanying the new strategy, Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said it was "critical to strengthen our cyber capabilities to address the threats we're facing".

The news comes one month after the Pentagon said it was building its own "scale model" of the internet to carry out cyber war games.

2011 Copa América

The 2011 Campeonato Sudamericano Copa América, better known as the 2011 Copa América or the Copa América Argentina 2011, is the 43rd edition of the Copa América, the main international football tournament for national teams in South America. The competition is organized by CONMEBOL, South America's football governing body, and is being held in Argentina from July 1 to July 24, 2011. The draw for the tournament was held in La Plata on November 11, 2010. The defending champion is Brazil. The highest finishing CONMEBOL team (other than Brazil) will earn the right to compete for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Brazil.^[1]

Competing nations

Both Japan and Mexico were invited to join the CONMEBOL nations in the tournament.^[2] Following a proposal by UEFA regarding national teams competing in tournaments organised by confederations different from their own, it was reported on November 23, 2009 that the two countries might not be able to take part in the 2011 Copa América.^[3] However, on March 31, 2010, CONCACAF confirmed that Mexico will be allowed to send their 2012 U-23 Olympic Team, supplemented with five over-age players.^[4] In addition for Mexico sending a weaker team than those teams sent in previous participations, 8 of the Mexican players originally called to play the Copa America 2011 were suspended one week before the competition started because of indiscipline.
Japan's participation was in doubt after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami,^[5] but the Japan Football Association confirmed on March 16, 2011 that they would participate.^[6] However, the Japanese FA later withdrew from the tournament on April 4, 2011 citing scheduling conflict with re-scheduled J. League matches.^[7][8] Following a meeting with the leadership of the Argentine Football Association, the Japanese FA decided to hold off on their final decision until April 15.^[9][10] The Japanese FA later announced on April 14 that they would compete in the competition using mainly European based players.^[11] The Japanese FA withdrew their team again on May 16 citing difficulties with European clubs in releasing Japanese players.^[12][13] On the next day, CONMEBOL sent a formal invitation letter to the Costa Rican Football Federation inviting Costa Rica as replacement.^[14] Costa Rica accepted the invitation later that day.^[15][16]
